Accompanying a patient with a ostomy in Pakistan…

Early in 2026, Mrs. Aziza* an Afghan refugee living in Pakistan with her children underwent a hysterectomy after being diagnosed with a massive uterine fibroid. Although the surgery initially appeared successful, her recovery did not progress as expected. Within two weeks, she became severely ill, experiencing intense pain and persistent vomiting. She was taken to the emergency room at another hospital, where a CT scan revealed that incorrect stitching during her hysterectomy had caused a small bowel obstruction.

Mrs. Aziza was admitted and, within two weeks of her first surgery, underwent another operation to remove the necrotic portion of her intestine. A temporary ileostomy was placed. While she recovered physically, she faced significant challenges in managing the ostomy. The limited supplies available to her were both expensive and unsuitable for a high-output stoma. Her ostomy bag and wafer frequently detached, leading to painful skin breakdown and discomfort.

Zarmina, our colleague and representative in Pakistan, learned about the case and mobilized the Jannu Ferides team, which in turn also received support from the Owings team….https://owings.es

In April, Mrs. Aziza received a package from Jannu Ferides containing ostomy bags, adhesive remover, ostomy rings, and other essential supplies. With these, she was finally able to manage her stoma effectively. Her skin condition improved, and she was relieved to wear the ostomy appliance comfortably for several days at a time.

Zarmina tells us firsthand that the family is deeply grateful for the help and support provided by Jannu Ferides and wishes that it can help more people, becoming a true lifesaver for others in need.
